Availity’s Compliance and Ethics mission is “to promote an organizational culture that encourages ethical conduct and a commitment to compliance with the law,” and the small but mighty Compliance and Ethics team works diligently to carry out that mission.

Leading the team is Catherine Hora-Anderson, Availity’s senior vice president of Legal and Regulatory Affairs, who also serves as the chief compliance and chief privacy officer. Operating under her guidance and direction are Erika Ables, a compliance and ethics program manager, and Lynn Cuneo-Andres, a senior compliance analyst. Erika and Lynn are Availity’s go-to resources for compliance, ethics, and privacy matters.

A day in the life of our compliance experts

As Availity’s compliance subject matter experts, Erika and Lynn are responsible for ensuring that regulations are adhered to throughout the organization and fostering a culture of compliance. Because healthcare technology continuously evolves, so too do the laws that protect patient data and privacy.

Erika and Lynn spend a lot of time collaborating with stakeholders across the business, which might include assisting the sales team with an RFP or working with development teams to mitigate risk in product development.

“We want associates to understand that we aren’t the ’no’ police. We are here to help find the best solution for the business,” Erika said. “I cannot stress this enough—we have an open-door policy.”

They know compliance can be tricky and expect associates will have questions. If associates are unsure or have an uneasy feeling about a situation, they are there to help. They also stress that Availity does not tolerate retaliation against associates who report known or suspected wrongdoing.

Getting to know Erika and Lynn

Erika has been in healthcare compliance for 13 years, with the last five at Availity. She appreciates how Availity instills a sense of community across the organization, starting at the executive level.

“We are not siloed here. I get to know people in all parts of the business to understand how they work and what they’re working on. I love the sense of community,” Erika says.

Lynn agrees, noting that Availity’s culture makes it enjoyable to come to work every day. Before joining Availity’s legal team in 2018, Lynn worked as a litigation paralegal for 17 years. She said that working near Erika in the office and under the same legal, audit and compliance umbrella sparked her interest in compliance and ethics, and she made the switch to her compliance analyst position five months ago.

While compliance is a serious issue, the team also knows how to relax after work. Erika has a passion for yoga and running.  She also enjoys watching her children and husband practice jiu-jitsu. Lynn and her husband spend most of their free time spectating at their children’s sporting events. Her 15-year-old daughter plays basketball and her 10-year-old son plays football.
