What’s it like when all of your day-to-day work tasks change seemingly overnight? Jim Gillis, Availity’s workplace solutions coordinator in the Jacksonville headquarters, found out when Availity closed its offices in March because of the COVID-19 threat. It’s been a journey for him, to say the least.

Before the pandemic, Jim’s role was to oversee facilities projects, which ranged from small tasks like replacing water filters to coordinating large workstation installations. In any given week, he might go from preparing meeting rooms for hundreds of attendees to overseeing company-wide refrigerator cleanouts.

But since COVID-19, Jim and the facilities team are now tasked with leading Availity’s efforts to implement safe office practices in both the Jacksonville and Indianapolis locations. Some initiatives, like hanging signs promoting handwashing and social distancing, haven’t required new skills. But for others, like creating socially distant seating charts, Jim has made sure to consult CDC guidelines.

Despite the uncertainty of the situation, Jim thrives on overcoming challenges. “In the beginning of the pandemic, the potential impact on our associates and the return to work process introduced many unknowns, Jim recalled. “We took a deep breath, focused on what we knew and continued to research and prepare for the unknown.”

While Availity is only allowing associates back into the office on a limited, case-by-case basis, Jim and the facilities team have made sure appropriate protocols are in place, including masks in public areas, hand sanitizer widely available, and closure of collaboration spaces. Jim is confident they will be able to handle things when more associates start coming into the offices.

When Jim isn’t ensuring the safety of our offices, he loves spending time with his family and taking offshore fishing trips.
